Take the opportunity to hike in one of the most beautiful areas of bio-diversity that exist in South Africa. The Green Mountain Eco Route encompasses Elgin Valley, Bot River, Vyeboom and Villiersdorp and our hike takes in the magnificence of this area, the natural charm of the locals, the excellent cool climate wines and the very interesting history as you re-trace some of the steps of the ox-wagons from way back. The four day hike is guided and the distances covered are approximately 18 kms - day 1, 15 kms - day 2, 13 kms – day 3 and 11 kms – day 4. You need to be an average to good hiker to attempt this hike - the beauty will astound you and the hospitality will definitely make you come back for more.
Limietberg
Hiking Trail
Nearest Town: Paarl
Trail distance: Day 1: 19km; Day 2: 17km
Trail limit: Groups limited to 12 people, with a maximum of 24 people
allowed on the trail per day.
Hut: The overnight hut lies near Eerste Tol in Bainskloof. Beds and mattresses
are provided for 24 people, as well as running water and field toilets.
Trail description: This linear two-day trail stretches from the foot of
Dutoitskloof via Bainskloof village (also known as Eerste Tol) to Tweede
Tol, over a distance of 36km.
It is 19km of fairly easy walking (about 7 hours), mainly on jeep tracks,
to the overnight hut at Happy Valley. The upper reaches of the Witte River
flow through this valley, forming many swimming pools, including the popular
Junction Pools.
Day 2 leads to Tweede Tol, a distance of 17km (about 8 hours). It leads
through more mountainous terrain. It is essential to carry water. The
route offers fantastic views, and climbs steadily to the highest point
at Pic Blanc (1049m). From here it descends to Wolwekloof and eventually
ends at Tweede Tol.

Highlands Trail

Trail distance: Day 1: 21km (6-7 hours): Day 2: 16km (8 hours)
Trail limit: 10 hikers
Trail description: This moderate to long circular trail starts from the
parking area on the farm Iona, in the mountains above Kleinmond. After
crossing the Highlands gravel road, it runs through farmland, along a
dam wall, a jeep track through plantations and fynbos veld. It overlooks
the Bot River vlei, wetlands and coastline of the Kogelberg Biosphere
Reserve. Day 2 starts from the overnight hut, to Geelhout and Swartrivier
Streets. Follow the trail markers along the contours, around Three Sisters
peaks and up to Perdeberg.

Boland Hiking Trail

Boesmanskloof to Landdroskop Hut - 17,5km (5-6 hours)
Nuweberg to Landdroskop to Boesmanskloof - 29km (13 hours)
Hut: Overnight huts are available at Landdroskop or Boesmanskloof. Each
overnight stop has two huts, sleeping 24 people each. Bunk beds, mattresses
and water are provided.
Trail description: The Hottentots Holland section of the Boland Hiking
Trail traverses the reserve. It has two overnight sites, each with two
huts, and various routes of one to three days to choose from. Ensure that
your route choice starts and ends at the Nuweberg offices. The terrain
is rugged and mountainous, with 1 300 mountain fynbos species and 110
bird species.
Hikers should be fit, experienced and well-equipped for extreme weather.
Due to severe weather and flooded rivers the routes could temporarily
close because of extreme conditions.

Trail description: The terrain is rugged and mountainous, with 1 300 mountain
fynbos species and 110 bird species. The trails are only advised for experienced
hikers.

Hut: Two huts are found at each of the overnight stops, each sleeping
24 people. Huts are equipped with bunk beds, mattresses and water.
Trail description: The terrain is rugged and mountainous, with 1 300 mountain
fynbos species and 110 bird species. Hikers should be experienced and
well-equipped for extreme weather.

Day 2: To Nuweberg 8km
Hut: The overnight stop has two huts, each sleeping 24 people. Huts are
provided with bunks, mattresses and water.
Trail description: This is one of Hottentots Holland's easier hiking options.
It leads past a rock formation that looks like the Egyptian sphinx. The
trail starts with an initial steep climb, and then follows through a picturesque
valley and along small streams. The terrain is rugged and mountainous,
with 1 300 mountain fynbos species and 110 bird species. Hikers should
be experienced and well-equipped for extreme weather.
